Newborn Resources

Our physicians are experienced in guiding new parents through a baby's "fourth trimester" - the time when your baby adjusts to being outside the womb and you adjust to your new life as a parent.

Below, we've shared below some general information to help you care for your newborn and know when to contact us.

If your baby has not received their first set of shots or is under 2 months old, fevers of 100.4 or more are emergencies.  Call us and select "urgent" to talk to us or our on-call nurse.

Tummy & Stool Issues

  • Constipation & Stooling - There are a variety of normal colors and consistencies for baby stool. If your baby has hard, small stool, contact us for recommendations. If your baby is very uncomfortable, not eating well, not making wet diapers or vomiting, contact our office.
  • Gas / Burping - It is normal for babies to be very gassy. As they grow, their gut matures and the gas often lessens by about 3 months. If you baby experiences great discomfort from gas, contact us for advice.
  • Reflux - This happens often during baby's first six months when their stomach is full of milk and the milk starts to move up the throat. Contact us if you are concerned and/or baby. is vomiting, very fussy or not making wet diapers.

Skin & Rash Issues

  • Baby skin is very sensitive and rashes are common.  Some of the more frequent conditions include baby acne, cradle cap and diaper rashes.
  • Our favorite cleanser for babies is Cetaphil gentle cleanser. You can wash baby's face with plain water or a tiny amount of Cetaphil gentle cleanser.
  • In our dry Colorado climate, you do not need to bathe your baby more than 2 to 3 times per week at most.
  • To avoid dry skin, apply lotion to baby's body, but not to their face, following bath time. Soaps, lotions and detergents should all say "dye-free, fragrance-free and hypo-allergenic".
  • CURRENT PATIENTS: If you are concerned about a developing rash or skin condition on your baby, please contact us on Spruce and send a picture of the rash.  We will offer digital advice or let you know if you need an appointment.
